The ROI of Delight

In an era where users are more and more immersed in slick, seamless and simple with every swipe or scroll, meeting basic experience requirements is no longer a competitive advantage - it’s the norm.
If your digital product works and is easy enough to use, that’s no longer enough to keep your users coming back. Without a soul or spark, you’re not safe from the next competitor who offers the same features with a little more heart.
At Now Boarding, we’ve spent 16 years obsessing over the bridge between seamless utility and real human emotion. The truth is, your users will remember the way your brand’s experience made them feel long after they forget your features.
Standard UX focuses on removing friction - making things easy to use. While critical, usability prevents frustration and encourages conversion, it doesn't necessarily inspire loyalty. To move from a nifty tool to a habit, you need what’s starting to become known as emotional design. It’s the subtle way a brand feels like it “gets me”, “excites me”, or “makes me happy.”
When you create micro-interactions that prioritise, value and celebrate your users, you create moments of joy that start to make you irreplaceable. This isn't just beautification or taking engagement to new levels - it's a strategic investment.
High-quality design and brand feel that leaves a positive, lasting impression is what ensures users love your product and continue using it.
Emotional connection is more than just guesswork, it’s neurobiology. And, scientifically speaking, any connection starts with understanding. If we understand the psychology behind our users’ behaviour, we’re equipped to create moments that help optimise the user journey for retention.
For example, gamification transforms a mundane task into a rewarding experience, using positive reinforcement to keep users engaged and excited. Progress rewards with badges or milestones are a top way to keep the experience fresh with gamification
These interactions trigger dopamine releases, reinforcing positive behaviours and keeping users coming back for more.
You can’t build a real emotional connection when you’re inconsistent. In fact, inconsistency is a great way to weaken your relationship with users. Take a fragmented UI, where buttons look different on every page. This makes your users work harder without even realising it, creating a sense of discomfort and less room to build trust.
This is where a Design System acts as a single source of truth as it ensures your brand’s visual identity remains consistent across every touchpoint. When a product feels predictable and cohesive, users feel safe and empowered.
Retention is the first thing we risk when we seek the cheapest or easiest solutions that don’t prioritise delighting. Or when we cut corners by skipping design and going full steam ahead with development. How do we avoid this?
You don't need a massive budget to start building emotional equity. In fact, we recommend a Minimum Viable (and Valuable) Product.
Often, an MVP focuses on basic features without the bells and whistles. This is excellent for testing core value and usability, but not great at telling you whether you’re making it into your users hearts by showing yours. And that means, it can’t test retention.
But, if you focus on solving one core problem in a way that makes your users feel heard, understood, valued, light or happy, not only will they want more, but they’ll tell others about it.
And that’s our take on the importance of emotional design. Efficiency and usability are, of course, vital. But without feeling connected to you in some way, your customers may not remain your customers for long.
